Consistent data processes between P&ID and Revit: How to avoid media discontinuity in process planning

When it comes to technical planning, many companies face the same challenge: How can 2D schematic drawings from AutoCAD or AutoCAD Plant 3D be efficiently linked to 3D models in Revit – without data loss, copy & paste, or manual rework?

With the P&ID Connector, Kleen Software offers a powerful solution that closes this gap. The specially developed workflow enables seamless and error-free data exchange between the systems and takes planning in the process industry to a new level.

The challenge: Efficient data exchange between AutoCAD and Revit

In industrial process planning, the precise integration of 2D schematic drawings from AutoCAD or AutoCAD Plant 3D into 3D models from Revit is a complex task. Manual transfers are time-consuming and prone to errors, leading to inconsistencies and increased workload.

Our solution: The P&ID Connector

The P&ID Connector offers a sophisticated workflow that enables a seamless connection between AutoCAD (including Plant 3D) and Revit. It transfers parameter content from 2D objects directly into 3D models, reducing manual input and minimizing sources of error.

Technological basics and functionality

The P&ID Connector consists of three coordinated plugins:

1. AutoCAD P&ID Connector Exporter

Exports block references with position data, attributes, and image files to an interface file.

2. AutoCAD Plant 3D P&ID Connector Exporter

Exports P&ID symbols (assets) with their properties and image files.

3. Revit P&ID Connector Importer

Imports the previously exported data into Revit and enables a 1:1 mapping of P&ID objects to Revit categories.

An integrated 2D viewer in Revit allows direct navigation in diagrams without having to open AutoCAD. The current status of the assignment is displayed in the plugin, with successfully connected objects marked in green.

Additional functions

  • Simple parameter assignments: Individual adaptation to company requirements.
  • Parallel working: Simultaneous use of AutoCAD Plant 3D and Revit without data loss.
  • Flexibility: AutoCAD blocks and Plant 3D classes can be linked to Revit categories.

Application examples and customer benefits

The P&ID Connector is ideal for:

  • Engineering firms: Efficient integration of 2D and 3D planning data.
  • Plant manufacturers: Reduction of sources of error during data transfer.
  • Operations planners: Quick adaptation and updating of planning data.

By automating data exchange, companies save time and resources and increase the accuracy of their planning.

Advantages at a glance

  • Seamless integration: Linking of 2D and 3D data without manual intermediate steps.
  • Increased efficiency: Reduced manual effort and accelerated processes.
  • Error reduction: Minimization of transmission errors through automated processes.
  • Flexibility: Adaptation to specific company requirements.
  • User-friendliness: Intuitive operation and clear visualization of the assignment status.

Conclusion

The P&ID Connector is the ideal bridge between 2D schematic drawings and 3D models and your solution for more accurate and efficient planning. Our tool was developed to create a seamless connection between these two worlds.
